Santa Clarita, CA – The Santa Clarita Christian boys basketball team played in the quarterfinals of CIF playoffs at The Master’s University against the La Quinta Aztecs of Westminster. They earned another dominant victory winning 86-45 and advance to the final four of Division 5AAA.
It was another night of great ball movement which allowed eight players to put points up on the board with three of them getting into the double digits. They also were on fire from deep as they made 13 three-pointers.
The game wasn’t a complete runaway as the Aztecs were able to pull within 8 points midway through the first half. Michael Nadeau, the Aztecs big man, was able to see success and dropped 11 points in the first half (he finished with 17 points). Kaleb Lowery, however, ensured to set the tone for the Cardinals as he had a monster jam late in the first quarter over Nadeau. Going into halftime SCCS held a comfortable 43-28 lead.
Coming out of halftime senior Jordan Starr utilized his size and drove hard into the paint. The Aztecs struggled to control the middle and he was able to drop 12 second-half points.
Ty Penberthy also found his rhythm in the second half as he deposited 11 points. He found success from the perimeter and also did well when he drove the lane.
The Cardinals also found their way defensively. Early in the game, the Aztecs found some success from the post. After a few adjustments at the half, they were able to contain the post and cause several turnovers.
The Cardinals win advances them to the semi-finals. This Friday they will travel to play the Bloomington High School Bruins (near Fontana) at 7 p.m. The Bruins advanced to the semi-finals by way of an upset victory over Fairmont Prep. They finished regular season play in the third place in the Sunkist League with a 6-4 record. The Cardinals and the Bruins have played a common opponent. They both played and defeated Rubidoux High School. The Bruins defeated Rubidoux 51-18 and the Cardinals defeated them in their first playoff game this year, 83-23.
