Cardinals News · Elementary Boys Basketball Win the Championship

February 11, 2018

Santa Clarita, CA – The Cardinals elementary “Red” team played the Legacy Lions today for the Santa Clarita Independent League Championship. They defeated the Lions 39-31 and won.

In front of their home crowd, the Cardinals fell behind 6-0 early in the first half. Coach Doron Gladden quickly decided to call a timeout. “Please settle down,” Gladden told his team. He went on to tell them, “Enjoy the moment! You’re prepared so there’s no need to be nervous. Have fun!”

His speech worked! J. R. Mosley hit a 3-pointer right after the timeout. That broke the ice and the Cardinals went on a 14-0 run. For the rest of the game, they never looked back.

The Lions refused to give up and never let the game get too far out of their reach. With under three minutes left to play, the Lions pulled to within six points.

Rylan Starr then stepped up and hit a 3-pointer that gave the Cardinals a 9-point lead. The Lions never recovered after that.

The Cardinals closed out the game and began celebrating their undefeated, championship season with a trophy presented by Athletic Director Josh Kristoff.

Gladden said of his team, “I had so much fun with this group. They played together and for each other…It is why they are undefeated champions.”

Congratulations to Coach Doron Gladden and his team!
