Boys Varsity Soccer · SCCS Boys Soccer Starts Season Strong and Matt Thompson Gets a Hat Trick

Santa Clarita Christian School boys’ soccer team won both games they played this week taking their overall record to 2-1. Both victories were over league opponents making them undefeated in league. The Cardinals have already matched their total wins from last year and look to keep the ball rolling through the rest of the season.

In their first game of the week, they took the field against Heritage League opponent Lancaster Baptist (0-2, 0-1). The game ended with the Cardinals on top, 3-1. By the end of the first half, neither team was able to find the back of the net. In the second half freshman, Matt Thompson was able to capitalize on a penalty kick to make the score 1-0. Just a short while later, Lancaster Baptist was able to even the score at one. The Cardinals didn’t let the Eagles quick response bother them. Matt Thompson was able to locate Braeden Berentsen on a throw-in and Berntsen found the back of the net to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead. Just two minutes later Thompson was able to get his second goal of the game and increase the Cardinals lead 3-1 and that’s where the score would be at the final whistle.

In their second game of the week, Cardinal soccer went onto the pitch to take on another league opponent, Valley Torah (0-2, 0-2). The game would end in a 5-0 Cardinal victory. Matt Thompson earned a hat trick with three goals in the match. TJ Evans and Brett Ramirez rounded out the scoring with a goal each.

The Cardinals have no other games before the Christmas break. They play their next game on Friday, January 5, 2018, against Buckley of Sherman Oaks (2-2).
